Chief Cliff

Chief Cliff quarry, northwest Montana

The stone name Chief Cliff originated at quarries located on a geologic feature called Chief Cliff in northwestern Montana. Subsequently, the name has been used broadly for a group of geologically related stones quarried throughout northwestern Montana. Collectively, the “Chief Cliff” stones are all very hard argillites and quartzites that form the Belt Supergroup of geologic formations.
