They stayed for nearly four centuries. One Roman settlement was along the swampy northern shoreline of the tidal Thames River. Consequently, to build the wall, the Romans brought in <a title=\"Kentish Ragstone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentish_ragstone\">Kentish Ragstone<\/a>, which was quarried about 50 miles southeast of London near Maidstone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>Click image to enlarge<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 600px;\" width=\"600\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Kentish Ragstone<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Kentish Ragstone is a dense, hard, durable limestone that was deposited in a shallow <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cretaceous\">Cretaceous<\/a> sea which covered this part of England 110-115 million years ago. It is clear from the broken end of the wall that the clay tiles were not just decoratively placed on the outside, but were laid though the width of the wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 600px;\" width=\"600\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Londinium Abandoned<\/span><\/strong> <br \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Around 410 AD, with the entire Western Roman Empire in disarray, Londinium was abandoned to the Picts and Celts that had long inhabited the British Isles.
