Limestones are interesting when viewed through a simple 10-power hand lens because they commonly contain fossil fragments. \u00a0The photos shown below were shot with\u00a0good lighting and a macro camera lens; however,\u00a0a similar view, if not quite as clear,\u00a0is possible with a hand lens. \u00a0Garden City Buff<\/span>TM<\/span><\/sub><\/span>\u00a0and Cortona<\/span>TM<\/span><\/sub><\/span> Limestones<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Garden<\/a>Both Garden City Buff Limestone<\/a><\/strong> and Cortona Limestone<\/a><\/strong> are quarried from the same geologic formation. Consequently, they have a similar range of colors and mix of marine fossils.\u00a0 The colors and textures of\u00a0\u00a0 these limestones make them work with many architectural styles<\/p>\n

\u00a0Glen Rose Limestone<\/span>TM<\/span><\/sub><\/p>\n

\"Glen<\/a>Glen Rose<\/a><\/strong> is an attractive limestone that ranges in color from gray to buff with some red staining. Up close, you can see fossil fragments, vessicles, calcite cement, and flecks of hematite (red) stain.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Pilgrim Limestone<\/span>TM<\/sub><\/span><\/p>\n

\"PILGRIM<\/a>Pilgrim Limestone<\/span><\/a><\/strong> has a beautiful light buff and gold color range that reminds us of the Mediterranean limestones. Up close, it is composed of small limestone pellets and sparse fossils cemented together with calcite.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0Garden City Gray<\/span>TM\u00a0<\/sub>Light and Dark Color Range<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"GARDEN<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0Garden City Gray Limestone comes in a lighter color range<\/a><\/strong>, shown above, and a darker color range<\/a><\/strong>, shown below. Up close the two limestones look pretty similar. The darker color comes from a greater amount of organic matter in the limestone.<\/p>\n

\"GARDEN<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0Cottonwood Limestone<\/span><\/p>\n

\"COTTONWOOD<\/a>Cottonwood Limestone<\/a><\/strong> has the lightest color of the stones shown here. \u00a0Light-colored limestones generally were deposited in higher energy environments (like shallow reefs) where any organic matter, which would stain the stone darker, has been broken down and removed. \u00a0Up close you can see a veritable hash of fossil fragments.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
