The <a title=\"Cortona Limestone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/stone-products\/building-stone\/limestones\/?showGallery=17&amp;startAt=0\" target=\"_blank\">Cortona Limestone<\/a>, shown at right, is quarried in large blocks that work well for making quoins.\u00a0 In this Tuscan-style project, the quoins have the same chopped faces as the rest of the stone in the wall.\u00a0 The terra cotta bricks mixed with the quoins emulate a common feature in Tuscan buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/CIMG0255-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"368\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7365\" alt=\"CIMG0255-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/CIMG0255-2.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=400&amp;h=368&amp;hash=7d71ff7a79e9f293aa154eaee2e62674\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/CIMG0255-2.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/CIMG0255-2-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes stonemasons, architects, and designers want the quoins to appear more finished than the rest of the stone.\u00a0 In the example shown below, the <a title=\"Cortona Limestone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/stone-products\/building-stone\/limestones\/?showGallery=17&amp;startAt=0\" target=\"_blank\">Cortona Limestone<\/a> quoins have a sawn face.\u00a0 The different surface texture makes the quoins stand out dramatically from the rest of the wall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cortona-Limestone-19092-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"384\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7370\" alt=\"Cortona Limestone 19092-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cortona-Limestone-19092-2.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=400&amp;h=384&amp;hash=ab6c82bc987a1770b882b1cd87843fbf\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cortona-Limestone-19092-2.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Cortona-Limestone-19092-2-300x288.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Gutted Quoins<\/strong><\/span><br \/>Most modern masonry walls are six-inch-thick stone veneers over block or framed walls.\u00a0 Designers sometimes want the quoins to be larger to make the stone walls appear thicker than they actually are.\u00a0 In this case, large quoins can be &#8220;gutted&#8221;, as shown below, so that they wrap around the corner of a 6 inch masonry wall.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Gutted-Quoins-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"609\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7382\" alt=\"Gutted Quoins 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Gutted-Quoins-2.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=350&amp;h=609&amp;hash=5e24a8e033adfe9052ded51f66f532c7\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Gutted-Quoins-2.jpg 350w, http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Gutted-Quoins-2-172x300.jpg 172w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>Making gutted quoins is a labor- and equipment-intensive process, as shown for the <a title=\"Wilkeson Sandstone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/stone-products\/building-stone\/sandstones\/?showGallery=105&amp;startAt=0\" target=\"_blank\">Wilkeson Sandstone<\/a> above. Consequently, gutted quoins are an expensive addition to a masonry project.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Ungutted Quoins<\/strong><\/span><br \/>To get the traditional appearance without the added expense of gutted quoins, most stonemasons will sort out the larger rectangular blocks to be used as corners.\u00a0 However, often times there won&#8217;t be enough large rectangular stones to make into quoins.\u00a0 In this case, a different stone can be used for the quoins.\u00a0 In the example shown below, the quoins were made from <a title=\"Frontier Sandstone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/stone-products\/building-stone\/sandstones\/?showGallery=31&amp;startAt=0\" target=\"_blank\">Frontier Sandstone<\/a>,whereas the rest of the stone in the wall is <a title=\"Homestead Fieldstone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/stone-products\/building-stone\/fieldstones\/?showGallery=5&amp;startAt=0\" target=\"_blank\">Homestead Fieldstone<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Frontier-tumbled-quoin-8404-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"374\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7377\" alt=\"Frontier tumbled quoin 8404-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Frontier-tumbled-quoin-8404-1.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=350&amp;h=374&amp;hash=f373d21b360578f053e5d94f6ad9bc42\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Frontier-tumbled-quoin-8404-1.jpg 350w, http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Frontier-tumbled-quoin-8404-1-280x300.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong> Basic Masonry Rules for Quoins<\/strong><\/span><br \/>There are just a few simple stonemasonry rules for setting quoins in a wall.\u00a0 The diagram below, reproduced from &#8220;<a title=\"Art of the Stonemason\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Art-The-Stonemason-Ian-Cramb\/dp\/0911469273\" target=\"_blank\">The Art of the Stonemason<\/a>,&#8221;
