Starting with a stonemasonry workshop in Santa Fe in 1986, the Stone Foundation has evolved into an eclectic international collection of stone masons, stone carvers, dry stone wallers, landscapers, architects, stone history buffs, and assorted hangers-on, including one former geologist now stone quarrier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/4-3-png-175x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"175\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-36\" alt=\"4-3-png-175x300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/4-3-png-175x300.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=175&amp;h=300&amp;hash=79fcb0104a31e451e3e458367cd46c60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This proverbial herd of cats is somehow corralled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tomas.lipps\" target=\"_blank\">Tomas Lipps<\/a>, a well-traveled New Mexico stonemason, writer, and agent provocateur with a love of stone, history, and people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11f-png1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-32\" alt=\"11f-png1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11f-png1-223x300.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=223&amp;h=300&amp;hash=60838affdb8137421b40dc3a7a773faa\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11f-png1-223x300.jpg 223w, http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/11f-png1.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>Tomas produces the Foundation\u2019s excellent publication called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonefoundation.org\/stonexus\/index1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stonenexus Magazine<\/a>. This magazine captures everything I like about the Stone Foundation \u2013 interesting well-written articles, historical sensitivity, beautiful photography, and scant advertising.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/composite-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-33\" alt=\"composite-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/composite-1-249x300.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=249&amp;h=300&amp;hash=f560f1805f540fb83abf78644dab3fa6\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/composite-1-249x300.jpg 249w, http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/composite-1.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a>Besides Stonenexus Magazine, the other tie that binds Stone Foundation members together is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonefoundation.org\/symposiums\/symp07.html\" target=\"_blank\">annual symposium<\/a>, which has been held at interesting locations including (my personal favorite) Mallorca \u2013 a beautiful limestone gem in the Mediterranean. The symposia include great workshops and presentations, interesting field trips, and various stone-related competitions along with the usual drinking and carousing common to this demographic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ssymp2013-png-221x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-35\" alt=\"ssymp2013-png-221x300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.selectstone.com\/journal\/images\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ssymp2013-png-221x300.jpg?aoe=1&amp;q=100&amp;w=221&amp;h=300&amp;hash=1d00f72f86faea43b811ac6d5dbd7cc9\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonefoundation.org\/symposiums\/2013symp\/2013ss.html\" target=\"_blank\">2013 symposium<\/a> will take the Stone Foundation back to its roots in Santa Fe, NM from October 22 \u2013 26. Northern New Mexico being one of my favorite places, I am marking my calendar.<\/p>\n<p>For a mere $50 annually you can<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonefoundation.org\/join.html\" target=\"_blank\"> join the Stone Foundation<\/a>.
